Camp Omega’s Response to COVID-19

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Camp Omega had to close its doors to guest and retreat groups from mid-March through May of 2020. As cases continue to rise nationwide, Camp Omega also made the difficult decision to cancel all youth camp related summer programming events.

In order to save financial resources and preserve cash flow, utilities and other expenses were cut, non-essential staff reduced, and a Paycheck Protection Program loan from the government was secured.

Camp Omega was among a handful of camps to still open a partial summer camp in a limited family camp only model in 2020. The Camp Omega Leadership Team and Board of Directors worked hard to adopt new guidelines from the CDC and the American Camping Association, secure and train summer staff, and adapt programming, policies, and facilities to accommodate a new and ever-changing COVID-19 environment.

The Financial & Missional Impact…

During the summer of 2020, because of Covid-19, Camp Omega lost the chance to serve over 2500 campers. This is a drop of 91% from normal camper attendance. These children, youth, and adults missed out on an adventure to grow in the Christian faith in the midst of God’s creation. They also lost the opportunity to grow in self-esteem, social skills, independence, relationships, and more. The winter, spring, and summer 2021 is also likely to be significantly affected by Covid-19.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Camp Omega had to close its doors to guest and retreat groups from mid-March through June of 2020. Looking forward, groups are projected to be two-thirds fewer than normal for the foreseeable future.

Because of retreat and school group cancellations, a significant drop is summer camp attendance, and a future outlook that is very uncertain, Camp Omega is projecting a loss of over $343,000 as a result of Covid-19. This represents 50% of Camp’s normal total budget!
